Kosovo President/ Haxhiu: I hope the situation does not come where I have to

Kosovo's acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, said that the country has no time to waste, adding that she hopes that the new president will be elected within the constitutional deadline, otherwise she will have to announce the date of new elections.

A day ago she stated that she is open to helping, if she can, with the president's case.

She explained on April 8 after the presidency meeting that in her capacity as Speaker of the Assembly she is ready to contribute by organizing meetings and discussions with parliamentary groups, if they assess that such meetings are necessary.

"I welcome the continuation of the meetings that have taken place in the past few days. We hope that we will put aside all differences and be together to find a solution for the president. I hope that the situation does not arise where, as acting president, I announce the date of the elections because, as you know, according to the Constitutional Court's ruling, the Assembly is considered dissolved when we meet the deadline and do not elect the president," said Haxhiu.

According to the ruling issued by the Constitutional Court in March, MPs have until April 28 to elect the country's new president, otherwise the country will go to elections, which must be held within 45 days.

"Therefore, if the parliamentary groups need me, I am at their service to help with meetings. But, I think it is important that all parliamentary groups and parties represented in the Assembly demonstrate the will to find a solution for the president ," Haxhiu emphasized.

Days ago, the leader of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, who is also the Prime Minister of Kosovo, met with Lumir Abdixhiku, the leader of the opposition entity, the Democratic League of Kosovo. However, no agreement was reached during the meeting on the issue of the president, but it was announced that meetings will continue in the coming days with the Democratic Party of Kosovo.

The mandate of the former President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, ended on April 4, and based on the Constitution, Haxhiu has assumed the position of acting president.

After meetings with the LDK and PDK failed to produce any agreement, Kurti's LVV on March 5 proposed two names for the position of president: Glauk Konjufca, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, and MP Fatmire Mullhaxha-Kollçaku. Due to the lack of a quorum, the process has been left half-way.

The next day, former President Vjosa Osmani presented a decree dissolving the Parliament and paving the way for new elections. Osmani herself was aiming for a second term, but did not secure the necessary support in this regard.

The decree was sent to the Constitutional Court by the Government. The court then issued a ruling, setting April 28 as the deadline for electing the president.

The Vetëvendosje Movement has convincingly won the early elections of December 28 and enjoys 57 seats in the Assembly, but they are insufficient to elect the president, since at least 80 votes are needed in the 120-member Assembly to finalize this process. /REL
