"Wall Street Journal" Trump will "punish" NATO allies that did not help him with Iran

US President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of "punishing" NATO members that did not help the US in the war with Iran, according to a report by the American media outlet "Wall Street Journal".

According to the report, which cites government officials, a plan is being considered to remove US troops from member states that were deemed "useless" for operations against Iran.

The closure of a US base in at least one European country, possibly in Spain or Germany, is also being considered, according to the American newspaper, noting that the proposal is a far cry from Trump's recent threats to completely withdraw the US from the Alliance, something that by law, he cannot do without Congressional approval.

The White House declined to comment on the content of the plan, while it remains unclear which countries would be affected by a possible decision. /CNA
