New trial begins in death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona

A new trial began this Tuesday in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires, over the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona.

The new trial will involve a process in which around 120 witnesses will be heard and will again seek to determine whether Maradona's medical team is responsible for his death.

The football legend passed away on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60 from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, two weeks after undergoing surgery.

Seven healthcare professionals, including doctors, psychologists and nurses, who treated Maradona are charged with premeditated murder, following a course of action despite knowing it would lead to death. They face prison sentences of eight to 25 years.

The defense claims that Maradona, who struggled with cocaine and alcohol addiction, died of natural causes./CNA
