New York Times: Israeli plan for Ahmadinejad to lead Iran after Khamenei's

A plan developed by Israel called for the reinstatement of former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the country's new leader, following the assassination of Ali Khamenei and other senior Iranian officials in late February, the prestigious American media outlet 'The New York Times' reported on Wednesday.

Ahmadinejad's seizure of power was one of the stages in Israel's anticipated multi-phase plan for war.

The first phase of the plan was the US-Israeli air campaign that killed senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Khamenei, along with a targeted mobilization of Kurdish forces, although the latter never materialized.

Israel believed that the invasion and attacks would destabilize the regime, with political pressure and damage to key infrastructure causing it to collapse. Then, an “alternative government” would be able to take control. The Mossad spy agency declined to comment.

The newspaper notes that a reported attack on Ahmadinejad's apartment during the first burst of the war, initially assumed to be targeting the former leader himself, was in fact directed at Islamic Revolutionary Guard officers enforcing the house arrest imposed by his regime.

Ahmadinejad was consulted about the plan, although the manner of his recruitment remains unknown.

The attack succeeded in freeing the former president, but injured him in the process, after which he is said to have become disillusioned with the scheme. He has not been seen since and his whereabouts are unknown.
