NATO fighter jet shoots down Ukrainian drone over Estonia

A NATO fighter jet shot down a Ukrainian drone over southern Estonia today. It was the latest incident in recent months in which Ukrainian drones aimed at Russia have crossed over or fallen into NATO territory.

Western officials earlier blamed what they called electronic jamming of the drones by Russia. Ukraine apologized for the unintentional incident, without specifying what had happened.

"Given the trajectory of the drone, we decided that we had to shoot it down," Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said, adding that it was most likely intended to hit some Russian targets. The drone was shot down by a Romanian F-16 deployed to NATO.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said in a statement that his country has not given Ukraine permission to use its airspace for attacks on Russia.

Meanwhile, Russia repeated the threat it has made in the past that it will retaliate if Ukrainian drones are launched from the Baltic countries or if these countries are complicit in using them against Russia.

Fighting continues along a 1,250-kilometer (780-mile) front line in eastern and southern Ukraine, where Russia's larger army is engaged in a slow-burning battle. There is no sign that a peace settlement is any closer, despite U.S. diplomatic efforts.

Ukraine has steadily increased drone attacks against Russia, focusing on energy facilities and weapons factories deep inside enemy territory, as its technology and scale of domestic production improve.

Long-range drone strikes are a hallmark of the war, which began more than four years ago when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine. /CNA
