Elon Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman is dropped

Elon Musk has lost his trial against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. A jury in California ruled that the artificial intelligence company, which created ChatGPT, was not liable to Musk for allegedly deviating from its original mission.

In a unanimous decision, the case was dismissed because Musk filed his lawsuit after the statute of limitations for bringing such claims had expired. Musk had accused Altman of violating a non-profit contract by turning the ChatGPT creator into a for-profit company after Musk donated $38 million.

According to the lawsuit, Musk claims that OpenAI was created in 2015 as a non-profit organization with the goal of developing artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity, not for financial gain. He argues that the close partnership with Microsoft and the transformation of the company's structure into a for-profit model contradict the principles on which the organization was founded.

In court documents, Musk accuses OpenAI of breach of contract and deviation from its original mission, while the company has denied the claims, stating that Musk himself had previously supported the idea of ??a for-profit structure.

OpenAI has also suggested that the lawsuit is related to growing competition in the artificial intelligence sector, as Musk already runs his own AI company, xAI.

Jurors spent three weeks listening to testimony from the parties and reached a verdict after deliberating for about two hours. Witnesses included Musk himself, Altman, and Satya Nadella, the Microsoft CEO, whom Musk accused of aiding and abetting the scheme he said was beneficial.

Musk's claims against Microsoft were dismissed as a matter of law given the jury's findings on the two claims against OpenAI. The pair founded OpenAI in 2015, but Musk left in 2018 after his co-founders denied him control. /CNA
