Aid enters Gaza through the border crossing with Israel

The border crossing between Israel and Gaza, Kerem Shalom, opened Sunday to aid trucks for the first time since the war broke out, Israeli officials said, with the goal of doubling the amount of food and medicine to the enclave.

This border point was closed after Hamas attacks on Israeli soil on October 7, which fueled the war.

Hamas militants have killed 1,200 people and taken 240 hostages.

Hamas, the Palestinian group that rules Gaza, has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

Until now, aid to Gaza has entered through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

Two Red Cross sources in Egypt have told the Reuters agency that trucks have started entering Gaza from Kerem Shalom.

One of them said that it is about 79 trucks with aid.

Kerem Shalom, on the border with Egypt, Israel and Gaza, is one of the key transit points for goods in and out of Gaza.

Israel is said to have approved the entry of aid as early as last week.

However, Israeli authorities have said that humanitarian aid may not reach Gazans, as humanitarian agencies in Gaza have not increased the capacity to distribute needed aid.

"If the United Nations does not have the capacity to collect and distribute, it does not matter how many points are opened. They cannot depend on the same mechanization that they had before the war," Colonel Elad Goren told Reuters.

Israel's air and ground military offensive in Gaza has resulted in over 18,700 Palestinians killed, according to Palestinian health authorities.

This military campaign has severely worsened the humanitarian situation, as over 85 percent of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been displaced from their homes and are living in makeshift camps.
