Warning in China, record cold temperatures

Temperatures in parts of China, including Shanxi, Hebei and Liaoning provinces, have dropped to their lowest levels ever, state broadcaster reported on Sunday.

The city of Jiçun may record a temperature even lower than -49.9 degrees Celsius, which was recorded only in January 1980, meteorologists said.

The Ministry of Agriculture has implemented the emergency response, and has asked the authorities to have snow and ice removal equipment ready.

"Coal reserves must be secured in advance, to guarantee that the power plants will be functional in critical periods", the authorities said.

On Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for an emergency response from everyone to the cold weather.
