Over 60 migrants are suspected to have drowned off the coast of Libya

More than 60 migrants are believed to have drowned in a sunken boat off the coast of Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has said.

Citing the survivors, this UN agency said that the boat left from the city of Zuvara with about 86 people.

According to the agency, huge waves hit the boat and 61 migrants, including children, are missing and believed to be dead.

Libya is among the main countries from which migrants intend to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.

According to the UN Refugee Agency, this year alone, 153,000 immigrants have arrived in Italy, mainly from Tunisia and Libya.

The IOM estimates that more than 2,200 people have drowned this year trying to make the same route - which is considered one of the world's most dangerous for migrants.

According to the agency, the victims of the latest incident are from Nigeria, Gambia, and several other African countries.

Among other things, it was mentioned that the 25 survivors were transferred to the detention center in Libya, where they received health care./ REL
