Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to make Russia a "sovereign, self-sufficient" power. facing west on Sunday in a campaign speech before running for president again in the March election.

"We must remember and never forget and tell our children: Russia will either be a sovereign, self-sufficient state, or it will not be there at all," Putin said, according to AFP, during a congress of the ruling United Russia party. .

"Russia cannot - like some countries - give up its sovereignty for a few sausages and become someone's satellite," he said, while accusing the West of unsuccessful attempts to “sowing internal trouble” in Russia.
