With diplomacy against the humanitarian disaster

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) begins a diplomatic tour in the Middle East on Sunday (17.03). In Jordan, he holds talks with King Abdullah II in Aqaba, where he has organized the airlift of supplies to the population in Gaza. King Abdullah is considered an important link between the Arab world and Israel's Western allies.

Scholz then holds talks in Israel. In addition to the improvement of the humanitarian situation of the population in the Gaza Strip, the announced Israeli offensive in Rafah is also expected to be a central topic. In Tel Aviv, Scholz also meets with German relatives of hostages taken by Hamas. This is Chancellor Scholz's second visit to the Middle East following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack against Israel. Hamas is categorized by the US, EU, Germany and other countries as a terrorist organization.

Scholz: Humanitarian aid must reach Gaza

Chancellor Scholz, before the trip to Jordan, emphasized once again that Germany stands by Israel, which ultimately defends itself. "And Israel has every right to defend itself against Hamas' attack." At the same time, the rules of international law must be respected. Civilian casualties must be avoided and humanitarian aid must arrive in Gaza, Scholz said.

Since the weekend, Bundeswehr planes launched from Jordan have distributed humanitarian aid from the air to the Gaza Strip. Humanitarian organizations warn that this is expensive, dangerous and ineffective. More ground humanitarian aid is needed. The German chancellor is of the same opinion. Obviously this way is not the best way, said Scholz. The best way is if more aid trucks would arrive in the Gaza Strip by land./ DW
