New Volcanic Eruption/ Lava flows towards Icelandic town

Icelandic authorities have declared a state of emergency in northern Iceland on Sunday after a new volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

This was the fourth volcanic eruption on this peninsula since last December.

It is believed to be the most powerful explosion to date. Fiery lava has flowed up to the protective walls surrounding the evacuated town of Grindavik, authorities announced.

People have also left the Blue Lagoon spa, one of Iceland's biggest tourist attractions.

Iceland's airspace remains open.

According to the authorities, the eruption of the volcano started at 20:00 on Saturday, north of Grindavik, in the location where the eruption had started on December 8.

The town of 3,800 people near Iceland's main airport was evacuated on November 10 when a series of earthquakes triggered ground cracks between Grindavik and Sylingarfell, a small alpine town in the north.

Some residents who had returned to Grindavik were forced to evacuate again on Saturday.

The volcano finally erupted on December 18, spewing lava in the direction of Grindavik. A second eruption occurred on January 14, and its lava flowed toward the city.

Defensive walls that had been strengthened after the first eruption stopped some of the lava, but several buildings were engulfed by the lava.

The first two eruptions lasted a few days. The third explosion occurred on February 8 and lasted a few hours.

In Iceland, a volcano erupts every four to five years on average. In 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, the largest in recent years, releasing large clouds of ash into the atmosphere, which caused the closure of airspace across Europe./ REL
