Venezuelan opposition leader Machado wins Nobel Peace Prize

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her fight against the country's dictatorship and dedicated the award in part to US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly insisted he deserves it.

Machado, a 58-year-old industrial engineer, was barred in 2024 by Venezuelan courts from running for president and challenging President Nicolas Maduro, who has been in power since 2013.

"Oh my God... I have no words," were Machado's first words after receiving the award from the secretary of the awards body, Kristian Berg Harpviken, in a phone call that the Nobel Committee posted on social media.

"Thank you very much, but I hope you understand that this is a movement, this is an achievement of an entire society. I am just one person. Of course I don't deserve it," she added.

She later said, in an X post in English: “I dedicate the award to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!”
