Chancellor Merz: Sunday could be a historic day for the Middle East

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated today in an interview with German broadcaster 'ARD' that next Sunday could be a historic day for the Middle East.

Merz referred to the prospect of releasing hostages held by Hamas and ending the armed conflict in Gaza.

The Chancellor also expressed hope that internal calm could return to Germany, while expressing Berlin's willingness to contribute to the reconstruction of Gaza.

"The agreement still needs to be approved by the Israeli cabinet and then the hostages must be released within 72 hours. Then Israel will withdraw its troops from a large part of the Gaza Strip. Above all, I hope that Jewish citizens will feel safer again, that these unacceptable anti-Semitic incidents will also be a thing of the past or at least significantly less. There is no longer any reason to protest for Palestinians in Germany," the chancellor stressed.

Merz said Germany will co-chair the conference on Gaza reconstruction with Egypt.

"The reconstruction starts very simply, with setting up tents there, so that people have the most basic sanitary conditions to live a somewhat humane life," Merz said./CNA
