Israeli government approves ceasefire agreement

The Israeli government has approved a ceasefire and hostage release agreement after a cabinet vote in the early hours of Friday morning local time.

The agreement is only the first phase of US President Donald Trump's 20-point peace plan, and there are still a number of difficult points to be resolved.

Here is what is expected to happen in this first phase:

A ceasefire in Gaza is expected to take effect early Saturday, 24 hours after the agreement is approved by the Israeli government.

Israeli troops will withdraw to a line that gives them control of 53% of the Gaza Strip, a spokesman for the Israeli prime minister's office said. This is the first of three phases of withdrawal in Trump's plan.

The release of Israeli hostages, both living and dead, held by Hamas will begin, followed by Israel's release of Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons, as well as detainees from Gaza.

The US is moving up to 200 troops already in the Middle East to Israel to coordinate a multinational force that will monitor the ceasefire, according to US officials.
