EU leaders secure two billion euros for the Balkans

The success of the European Union (EU) summit, which took place on Thursday in Brussels, where the decision for aid of 50 billion euros for Ukraine was approved, is also important for development assistance for the countries of the Western Balkans.

This was said by several EU leaders after the end of the summit in Brussels, talking about the rebalancing of the EU's multi-year financial framework for the period 2021-2027.

EU leaders on Thursday approved the unanimous decision, ensuring the agreement of Hungary, which for several months kept the decision blocked, for which unanimous agreement of all member countries is needed. With this decision, a total of 65 billion euros are allocated to complete the EU budget for the next four years.

Of these, 50 billion euros will be macro-financial assistance for Ukraine, close to 10 billion will be for the management of illegal migration. But 2 billion will be for the countries of the Western Balkans. These will be included in the EU plan for economic growth in the countries of the Western Balkans. The European Commission had previously presented this plan, but the means for it had not been provided until now.

Now the agreement of the European Parliament is needed so that the EU can start providing financial assistance for economic growth in the Western Balkans region. The European Commission has mentioned the overall package of 6 billion euros. But, of them, 2 billion will be in the form of grants, while 4 billion will be withdrawn in the form of favorable loans for which the European Union will provide guarantees.

The European Commission has warned that the use of these tools by the countries of the region will be subject to the rule of law.
