JD Vance: Gaza deal is close, but very complicated negotiations could fail

US Vice President JD Vance says the Trump administration is on the final stretch with its Gaza peace plan and is very optimistic about the chances of seeing it through, while acknowledging that things could fall apart at the last minute.

Vance's comments to Fox News were a little more cautious than those coming from US President Donald Trump, who told reporters on Friday that he thinks they have a deal on Gaza.

"There are very complicated negotiations going on right now between Arab leaders, between the Israelis and between the Trump administration led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio," Vance told Fox News.

Israel has not yet signed the proposal and it has not yet been presented to Hamas, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The source said Arab countries have submitted recommended changes to the 21-point plan that was presented to them last week, and the US is expected to finalize the proposal today.

Trump acknowledged last week that he would need to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before the plan could be finalized. That meeting is scheduled for tomorrow. /CNA
