Assassination of Colombian politician/ 15-year-old perpetrator arrested

Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, a potential presidential candidate, survived initial surgery for his wounds after being shot in Bogota, according to his wife and the hospital treating him, although he remains in intensive care.

He was shot twice Saturday afternoon in the capital's Fontibon neighborhood, according to the Attorney General's Office. Police said they arrested the 15-year-old who shot Uribe. The perpetrator was carrying a Glock pistol when he was arrested.

Footage showed the senator giving a speech to a crowd before several loud explosions were heard. He was seen lying on the ground as people around him panicked. Police and civilians later rushed him to an ambulance.

Uribe, 39, is a member of the right-wing opposition party, the Democratic Center, and was shot in the head during an election campaign event in a public park./CNA
