Massive protest in the streets of Madrid / Spaniards demand early elections

Tens of thousands of people have gathered in central Madrid to protest against the government of Spain's Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and demand early general elections, as his party, administration and family continue to face a series of corruption allegations.

Sunday's protest, called by the opposition conservative People's Party under the slogan "mafia or democracy," attracted between 45,000 and 50,000 people, according to the central government delegation in the region. Organizers estimated the turnout at 100,000, according to a report by The Guardian.

Sánchez's government and his inner circle have faced a series of corruption allegations over the past year. Pressure on his Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has increased in recent days after a former party member was accused of trying to wage a smear campaign against the Guardia Civil police unit investigating the prime minister's wife, Begoña Gómez, his brother, David Sánchez, and former transport minister José Luis Ábalos.

Sánchez's administration has also faced questions since it was revealed in February last year that an assistant to Ábalo, once a close ally and confidant of the prime minister, had been arrested on suspicion of receiving payments to facilitate contracts for hygiene masks during the coronavirus pandemic. /CNA
