Germany approves 3 billion euro aid package for Ukraine

Germany's budget committee has cleared the way for a new military aid package for Ukraine worth 3 billion euros, as Friedrich Merz - the incoming chancellor - pushes for increased defense investment.

Both houses of Parliament this week approved the plan of Merz's conservatives and the Social Democrats, who are holding talks on the formation of the new German government.

Merz's spending plans approved by the Upper House of Parliament on March 21 provide for the creation of a 500 billion euro fund for infrastructure spending and easing borrowing rules, enabling higher defense spending.

Meanwhile, the Budget Committee's decision was confirmed by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

The 3 billion euro package includes 2.547 billion from the Ministry of Finance to be provided to Ukraine this year, complemented by other contributions, including a reimbursement from the European Peace Mechanism.

The German Finance Ministry also plans to authorize 8.252 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine for the period from 2026 to 2029, bringing the total aid to 11 billion euros.

"It was time" for the parliamentary committee to pave the way for the use of the funds, and Germany is now setting the pace for Europe's support for Ukraine, Baerbock said in a statement.

"Ukraine's military situation has become more difficult in recent months," she added.

European Union members, whose leaders gathered this week to discuss aid for Ukraine, are under pressure to show their commitment to Ukraine, which is facing Russian invasion, as uncertainty grows over the future of security guarantees from the United States under Donald Trump .
