New EU plan/ Aims to purchase defensive weapons to increase security

The European Union announced on Wednesday a new effort to break its security dependence on other countries, with a focus on buying more weapons and defense equipment in Europe rather than from suppliers across the Atlantic.

The EU's executive branch unveiled its "Readiness 2030" security strategy with the threat of Russian aggression at the forefront of concerns. NATO intelligence assessments suggest Russia could be capable of launching another attack on Europe in three to five years.

Under the new strategy, member states will be required to buy a large part of their military equipment in Europe, working mainly with European suppliers, in some cases with EU help to lower prices and speed up orders. They should only buy equipment from abroad when costs, performance or delivery delays make it preferable.

"The era of the peace dividend is long gone. The security architecture on which we relied can no longer be taken for granted. We must invest in defense, strengthen our capabilities and take a proactive approach to security," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The 27 EU countries have placed about two-thirds of their orders with US defense companies. To qualify for the new loans, they will have to buy at least 65% of the equipment from suppliers in the EU, Norway or Ukraine. /CNA
