Migrant boat sinks off Italian coast / 40 dead and 40 missing

Six people have died and 40 others are missing after a migrant boat sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa, Italian national media reported on Wednesday.

Chiara Cardoletti, Italy's representative to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said in a post on the "X" network that the overcrowded boat had left Tunisia on Monday with 56 people on board.

"After several hours of sailing, the raft began to deflate and take on water. Six bodies were found, there are 40 missing," she said.

The dinghy was reportedly found partially deflated on the small rocky outcrop of Lampione, west of Lampedusa.

Italian coastguard authorities have rescued 10 people, six men and four women, and are clearing the area for survivors, a UNHCR spokesman told AFP.

The migrants were from Ivory Coast, Mali, Gambia and Cameroon.

Some 8,743 migrants have arrived in Italy so far this year, according to Italy's interior ministry. /CNA
