New executive order/ Trump ready to abolish the Department of Education

US President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order, following up on a campaign promise to dismantle the Department of Education, in what is seen as a shift in US education policies.

Trump claims the department was full of radicals, zealots and Marxists. Trump and supporters of dismantling the department have long said the agency has failed American students.

"NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) results reveal a national crisis, our children are falling behind. Over the past four years, Democrats have allowed millions of illegal minors to enter the country, straining school resources and diverting focus from American students," a US official said.

President Trump's executive order to expand educational opportunities will empower parents, states, and communities to take control and improve outcomes for all students.

In addition, Trump has supported returning education to states by choice.

"I want every parent in America to be empowered to send their child to the public, private, charter or faith-based school of their choice. The time has come for universal school choice. As we return education to the states, I will use every power I have to give parents that right," Trump said.

Before that can happen, Congress must sign off on the agency's abolition, under Article II of the US Constitution. /CNA
