French footballer dies after falling into Thai waterfall while taking selfie

French footballer Alexis Vergos has died after falling into a waterfall in Thailand while taking a selfie with his girlfriend. 

Alexis Vergos was climbing a mountain in Surat Thani province on Monday afternoon when the couple stopped to take photos.

The 22-year-old, from Quimper, France, was reportedly turning back to get a better look at the Na Muang 2 Waterfall on the island of Koh Samui when he slipped and fell to his death.

Police Major Chayut Tulachotikul, of the Koh Samui Police Station, said the footballer and his girlfriend arrived in Koh Samui on Sunday.

He was taking photos at the waterfall when he fell into the water and was hit by rocks, dying at the scene. /CNA
