France seeks military and police assistance from abroad for security during the

France said on Friday it had asked 46 countries if they could help it send more than 2,000 police officers to maintain security during this summer's Olympics in Paris.

Organizers are finalizing security plans for the first Olympics in the French capital in a century, amid concerns about possible attacks.

France's interior ministry said on Friday that the request for foreign security assistance was made in January. She has requested nearly 2,185 officers to help with security during the Games and to "strengthen international cooperation," she said.

"This is a classic approach of the host countries for the organization of major international events", said the Ministry.

She pointed out that France had sent 200 gendarmes to Qatar for the 2022 soccer World Cup, as well as welcoming 160 officers from European security forces for the Rugby World Cup, which France hosted last year.

Separately, France's Defense Ministry has asked foreign countries for a "small number" of soldiers who can help with "very specific" tasks during the Games, said Colonel Pierre Gaudilliere, who is a spokesman for the General Staff.

Poland's Defense Minister, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, said his country will send soldiers to the Paris Olympics.

Security is the biggest challenge for French authorities during the Olympics in Paris, a city that has been repeatedly hit by deadly attacks by Islamic extremists and which welcomes fewer than 15 million visitors from July 26 to August 11.

The French government has raised its security alert to the highest level, following a deadly attack on a concert hall in Russia, for which Islamic State claimed responsibility.

More than 140 people were killed by several men who opened fire on concertgoers and then set fire to the building on March 22./ REL
