He came out openly against Putin and the war in Ukraine, 25 years in prison for the dissident

Opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by Russian authorities for treason and other charges related to his criticism of the war in Ukraine.

The Russian-British former journalist and politician is the latest in a number of Putin opponents who have been arrested or forced to leave Russia.

He has denied the charges and has always been a vocal critic of his trial.

"I agree with every word I said. Not only do I not regret it, but I am proud of it ," he said during the hearing before a court in Moscow, CNN reports. 

Following criticism of the so-called "special military operation" in Ukraine, Kara-Murza has also spoken out against President Vladimir Putin. 

The 41-year-old played a key role in persuading Western governments to sanction Russian officials for human rights abuses and corruption.
