Study: Millions of years old viruses help fight cancer

'Relics' of ancient viruses that have spent millions of years hidden within human DNA help the body fight cancer, scientists say.

The study from the "Francis Crick" Institute showed that the remnants of these old viruses wake up when cancer cells get out of control.

This helps the immune system target and attack the tumor, writes CNN. 

The team wants to use the discovery to create vaccines that could boost cancer treatment, or even prevent it.

Researchers had noticed a link between better survival from lung cancer and a part of the immune system, called B cells, clustering around tumors.

B cells are the part of our body that produce antibodies and are best known for their role in fighting infections, such as Covid.

More than 8% of what we think of as "human" DNA actually has such viral origins. Some of these retroviruses became part of our genetic code tens of millions of years ago.
