Zelenskiy calls for quick NATO membership

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy calls for quick membership of Ukraine in NATO.

Before the NATO summit to be held in July in Lithuania, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine needs effective security guarantees.

In his speech, the Ukrainian leader also reiterated Kiev's desire to join the NATO military alliance as soon as possible.

"Effective guarantees for the security of Ukraine (...) are necessary even before we join the NATO alliance," Zelenskiy said without giving further details.

Zelenskiy wants accelerated accession to NATO

Ukraine has sought to join the NATO military alliance for years, but in February, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said that Ukraine would become a member of the NATO alliance, adding at the same time that this will happen in the long run.

One of the prerequisites for NATO membership is that the candidate country is not involved in international conflicts and has no border disputes.

This condition constitutes a challenge for Ukraine, because it continues to face Russian aggression./ DW
