The group of seven richest countries in the world has set new joint targets for the production of electricity from wind and solar rays. The G-7 countries agreed to accelerate the development of renewable energy and transition as quickly as possible from the use of fossil resources.
However, the ministers meeting in Japan did not agree that 2030 should be the deadline for phasing out the use of coal, as requested by Canada and some other countries. Officials agreed to continue investing in the gas industry, saying the sector could help address potential energy shortages.
The two-day meeting of G-7 ministers in Japan ended on Sunday. Renewable energy sources and energy security have taken on special importance after the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Through a joint declaration, member countries pledged to collectively increase wind energy production by 150 gigawatts by 2030 and more than 1 terawatt of solar energy./ VOA
