Days of riots in France / Around 85 thousand people protest against public

Unions in France are holding another day of widespread strikes across the country, putting pressure on newly appointed Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu to overturn an existing austerity program and stop any new cuts to public spending.

France's Interior Ministry said roughly 85,000 people had taken to the streets across the country by midday on Thursday, excluding Paris, a figure lower than two weeks ago, which drew much larger crowds, indicating a lower overall turnout.

The protests led to clashes in cities across France between demonstrators and police, with the latter firing tear gas and arresting around 140 people across the country.

France deployed about 76,000 police officers, including gendarmes, across the country for the protests, outgoing Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said on Thursday, including 5,000 in Paris, where between 20,000 and 40,000 people are expected to take to the streets.

Authorities said they expected 250 rallies to take place in cities across the country.

Two major strikes organized by unions have taken place this month and have been sparked by widespread opposition to an austerity budget that the country's leadership has tried to push through parliament. /CNA
