Temperatures fell to -13 degrees overnight, making it the coldest night of the winter, as waves of Arctic air continue to move across the UK.

Forecasters had said Tuesday night was the coldest January in 14 years.

"Bitter" conditions and heavy snowfall have forced schools to close in Scotland and northern England and caused travel disruptions. 

By the end of Friday, more than 40cm of snow is expected in the highlands of north-west Scotland, the Met Office has predicted.

Snow and rain are expected to continue to blanket northern parts of the UK, although there will be some sunshine. /CNA
