UK sanctions 4 Israelis in West Bank

Britain sanctioned four Israeli nationals on Monday, saying they were "extremist" settlers who attacked Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The four Israeli nationals face strict financial and travel measures, which Britain said had committed "gross human rights violations".

"Extremist Israeli settlers are threatening Palestinians, often at gunpoint, forcing them to abandon lands that are legally theirs," said British Foreign Secretary David Cameron.

"This behavior is illegal and unacceptable. Israel must also take stronger action and end settler violence. We often see promises made that are not fulfilled," he added.

Britain's Foreign Office said the scale of settler violence had been unprecedented over the past year in the West Bank.

The United States also sanctioned four Israeli settlers earlier this month, accusing them of involvement in violence in the West Bank.

Violence in the West Bank has escalated since Hamas - the Palestinian group designated as a terrorist organization by the US and the EU - attacked Israel on October 7.

Palestinian authorities say several Palestinians have been killed, while rights groups say settlers have burned cars and attacked several small Bedouin communities, forcing them to evacuate.

Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war, along with the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.
