President Biden urges Israeli prime minister to protect displaced people in Rafah

Israel should not conduct any military operations in the densely populated Gaza city of Rafah without "a credible and workable plan" to protect civilians, President Joe Biden told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, the White House said.

This is the strongest language President Biden has used on possible intervention.

President Biden's phone call with Prime Minister Netanyahu came days after the US leader told reporters that Israel's intervention in the Palestinian territory of Gaza was "excessive" and called for "urgent and special" steps to strengthen humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the region.

The White House said the phone call also focused on ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages taken by the Hamas group during the Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

The White House added that the two leaders agreed to continue to stay in close communication.

Israeli television Channel 13 said the conversation lasted 45 minutes. Aid agencies say that an intervention in Rafah would be catastrophic./ Voa
