Australia opposes historic Indigenous referendum

Australia has flatly rejected a historic referendum to recognize indigenous peoples in its constitution.

The proposal - known as the Voice - also sought to create a First Nations body to advise the government on issues affecting their communities.

No campaigners labeled the vote divisive, while Yes defenders hailed it as a historic chance for change.

Nearly 18 million people registered to vote.

The No result was announced less than an hour and a half after polls had closed on Australia's east coast as counting continued at polling stations across the country. The final results showed a No in every state and in the popular vote.

Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese - who called the referendum earlier this year - said he respected the vote and the "democratic process".
