Portugal has decided to speed up the recognition of medical degrees issued by foreign higher education institutions.

The Portuguese government said all those with medical degrees issued by foreign institutions will have access to a "special recognition regime" aimed at recruiting doctors for the country's National Health Service, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports  . 

Portugal's decision to speed up the recognition of foreign medical degrees comes at a time when there are many vacancies in the healthcare sector.

Considering the current situation, the government notes that it is important to make changes to the current laws that the country has.

In addition, it is noted that the country should be more open to the employment of foreign health professionals, regardless of whether they have received their degree from a Portuguese educational institution or not.

As part of its measures, the government states that Portugal will now automatically recognize foreign degrees that have already been accepted by an EU member state.

This means that if Germany, for example, has recognized a medical degree issued by a foreign educational institution, Portugal will automatically recognize it as well, without requiring the holder to undergo any additional procedures. /CNA
