Tragic train accident in Indonesia/ 14 dead and dozens injured

A tragic train accident has occurred in Indonesia, where two trains collided with each other. As a result, at least 14 people have died and around 84 others have been injured.

Search and rescue operations continue at the scene, while according to reports, there are people trapped in the deformed metal sheets of a wagon.

Mohammad Syafii, head of the country's search and rescue agency, said during a press conference that it was a delicate process to rescue survivors from the damaged carriages.

"There are some people who are still alive at this point and we hope to get them out, but they are still trapped by the train debris," he said.

The accident happened late in the day near the Bekasi Timur train station, about 25 kilometers east of the Indonesian capital.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said he had agreed to build an overpass near the tracks to help ease heavy traffic. He added that large parts of the country's rail network are not well maintained.

Land transport accidents are common in Indonesia, with another train crash in West Java province in 2024 killing four people and injuring dozens more. In 2015, a train crashed into a minibus at a level crossing in Jakarta, killing 16 people. /CNA
