The International Assistance Mission said 18 staff members, including an international team member who local media reported was a US citizen, were taken from their office on two separate occasions within a month, DW reports.
An Afghanistan-based nonprofit organization said Saturday it was working with the United Nations and others to free 18 staff members, including a foreigner, arrested by the Taliban.
The International Assistance Mission said two Afghan nationals and a member of the international team were taken from its office in central Ghor on September 3. The non-profit organization said 15 other Afghan national staff members were taken from the same office on September 13. The group said all of them had been sent to Kabul.
The group said in a statement that they had been working in the country alongside Afghans for 57 years. They stand by the "principle that aid will not be used to advance a particular political or religious viewpoint," the statement said.
Local media reported that an American citizen is among those arrested and that staff members were arrested for doing Christian missionary work.
NGOs under attack
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have come under increased scrutiny since the Taliban came to power two years ago. After taking power, the Taliban forced almost all women to quit their jobs.
In December last year, the regime banned Afghan women from working in non-governmental agencies, forcing some NGOs to suspend work after having women working for them.
The Taliban have also banned girls from attending secondary schools and closed the women's university.
The International Assistance Mission said on its website that the group has been working in Afghanistan to improve lives and build local health, community development and education in partnership with international Christian volunteers./ Adapted by CNA
