Skopje declares three Russian diplomats persona non grata

The Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed on Saturday that three Russian diplomats have been declared persons undesirable. The Ministry announced that on September 12 it had summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Skopje to hand over the diplomatic note.

The decision, according to the MFA, was taken after notifications from the competent authorities about activities of diplomats that conflict with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

The announcement of the decision was made public on the platform X, formerly known as 'Twitter', on Friday afternoon by the Russian Embassy. Meanwhile, the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Marija Zaharova, wrote on social networks that the declaration of Russian diplomats as 'persona non grata' by the authorities in Skopje was made without clarifying the reason for this decision. She described this as a hostile and irresponsible act, while emphasizing that "this will not go unanswered".

North Macedonia has also expelled Russian diplomats in the past, either in solidarity with the decisions of the European Union, or based on notifications about their impermissible activities in the country. / Voice of America
