Massive Russian attack on Ukraine / Dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones

Russia has carried out a wave of air strikes on Ukraine, launching hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles into several regions of the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the capital Kiev was the main target of the attack, while other areas were also hit hard.

According to Ukrainian authorities, at least four people were killed in Kiev and the surrounding region, while about 100 people were injured.

Loud explosions were heard throughout the night in the capital. The attacks damaged dozens of residential buildings, a school, an opera house and a museum. Ukrainian authorities also reported that a water supply facility was hit, while the Chernobyl Museum in Kiev was “virtually destroyed.”

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the Oreshnik hypersonic missile was used during the attack, claiming that the operation was a response to “Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure.” On the other hand, the Ukrainian military categorically denies accusations of attacks on civilians.

European leaders strongly condemned Russia's attacks on Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the possible use of the Oreshnik missile, while EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called it "a political scare tactic and a dangerous nuclear adventure."

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that the Cherkasy, Kharkiv, Odesa, Poltava, Sumy and Zhytomyr regions were also hit by Russian attacks.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia fired 90 missiles and about 600 drones from Saturday evening to the early hours of Sunday. It said 55 missiles and 549 drones were shot down or neutralized, although there were direct hits in dozens of locations.

Separately, Russia reported that energy infrastructure in the Belgorod region was damaged by a Ukrainian missile attack, causing power and water outages, but no casualties. /CNA
