Turkish police raid main opposition party headquarters

Turkish police fired tear gas and forcibly entered the headquarters of the main opposition CHP party.

Police forces broke through an improvised barricade to enter the premises of the Republican People's Party (CHP) and then spread inside the building.

A Turkish court ousted CHP leader Ozgur Ozel on Thursday, nullifying the results of the CHP congress that elected him in 2023, citing irregularities. On Sunday, the Ankara governor ordered the expulsion of those inside the headquarters.

The court reinstated former CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who lost to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in national elections that year, in Ozel's place.

Analysts have said they see the court's decision as a test of the balance between democracy and autocracy for NATO member Turkey, and that it could extend Erdogan's 23-year rule. /CNA
