"They continue to progress"/ Von der Leyen praises the progress of

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during a joint press conference with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, praised the progress of Albania and Montenegro on the path towards membership in the European Union.

Von der Leyen said she welcomed the focus the Irish Government has placed on pushing forward the membership applications of candidate countries.

"Albania and Montenegro continue to make progress in the enlargement process. I very much welcome your strong support for this process, as you have described, based on merit. This support includes the aim of concluding accession negotiations with Montenegro by the end of the year ," said Von der Leyen.

The EC President said that Ireland's history of membership in the European Union was the most convincing argument for the bloc's continued expansion.

The visit of the President of the European Commission also marks the beginning of the Irish presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The presidency of the Council of the EU rotates between countries every six months. Irish ministers, as part of the presidency, will chair EU-level meetings for the rest of the year. /CNA
