Intense rainfall in several regions/ Ministry of Defense: Citizens should avoid

On November 17 and 18, Albania will be hit by heavy rainfall, which may increase the risk of flooding, based on the forecast made by the Institute of Geosciences.

Today and tomorrow, intense to very intense rainfall is expected in the regions of Shkodër, Kukës, Vlorë and Gjirokastër, while intense rainfall is expected in Lezha and moderate to intense rainfall is expected in Dibër, Durrës and Tirana. The storms may cause flash floods, landslides and localized urban flooding.

Flows in major rivers, including the Drin-Buna, Mat, Ishëm, Erzen, Shkumbin and Vjosa, are expected to increase significantly in the coming days.

The Ministry of Defense and the National Civil Protection Agency have asked municipalities and local structures to take urgent measures:

- Notification of the population, livestock farmers and businesses at risk;

- Checking and unblocking sewers and manholes;

- Put hydropower plants, water supply and sewage systems and energy supply on standby;

- Continuously monitor water levels and, when necessary, organize preventive evacuation.

The ministry appeals to citizens to be careful, avoid movement in high-risk areas and follow the instructions of the authorities./CNA
