Beqiri has told this Sunday his painful story and the exile that was done to him after the attempt to escape in 1987.

He said that at the age of 31, he tried to escape by swimming with a friend from Saranda to Corfu.

"I was 31 years old when I tried to escape in 1987 from Saranda.

Seeing that there were no changes, I decided to escape together with a friend of mine. We landed in Saranda on October 17, 1987," he confessed.

But everything went downhill when his friend got a leg cramp and was spotted by the army, who shot him with a machine gun.

"Unfortunately, this friend who was with me got a cramp, as it's called, his leg, the ball of his leg, got blocked. I tried to help him during the night. In fact, the morning took us, we were in our waters, we had not gone out into neutral waters or further, and the border ship that was passing, saw us with binoculars and came to us. We were in the water, we couldn't move. They shot us with a machine gun to kill us. It was our fate that I am here today to tell this more or less painful story, but it is necessary for the younger generations to know.

Despite escaping the bullets, the two young men awaited inhuman torture inside the ship.

Beqiri said that for the escape attempt he was sentenced to 22 years in prison, while his friend was sentenced to 21 years in prison./ CNA
