Veliaj's friend at the head of the ICS/ Minister Gogu appoints the

Minister of Justice, Toni Gogu, has undertaken a series of moves at the helm of key institutions of the prison system, entrusting leadership to figures who have a common denominator, a close connection with the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.

Recent changes within the justice department demonstrate a clear trend of transferring powers to leaders from Veliaj's circle of supporters. This phenomenon is being observed in two of the most sensitive positions in the system.

After Klevis Qose's departure from the General Directorate of Prisons, Adriatik Kupi, who is known as a close associate and supporter of Mayor Veliaj, was appointed head of this institution.

On Thursday, Minister Gogu relieved Indrit Doda of his duties to appoint Gentjan Myrto as head of the Internal Control Service of Prisons.

The latter, prior to this task, served as head of the Vaqarr Administrative Unit, openly positioning himself as part of Erion Veliaj's support structure.

This rotation comes precisely at the moment when the Internal Audit Service is being transformed by a new law into an agency with expanded powers.

Now, this structure under the direction of Gentjan Myrtos will not only control security within prisons, but will also supervise the Probation Service, becoming one of the most powerful monitoring links in the country.

The fact that both new leaders, both Kupi and Myrto, are considered "Veliaj's people" has raised questions about the independence of these institutions, especially at a time when the mayor of the capital himself is facing a difficult legal situation, as he is in Durrës prison, accused of 13 charges and 5 serious criminal offenses./ CNA
