Law on Referendums/ Çepani: Strategy to remove small parties

Activist Edlira Çepani spoke this evening regarding the presentation of the draft law on referendums by the Socialist Party. Invited to the show "Now with Erla Mëhillin", Çepani said that a referendum is something positive if it is done in the right way.

According to her, this referendum law is related to reducing the number of MPs. Among other things, she added that this is a strategy to remove new and small parties.

"The referendum is positive if it is done in the right way. Even in the speech it was related to reducing the number of deputies. This could be one of the first things that could be asked in the referendum. It is a "tick" that is also needed for the process of integration into the European Union.

"As for reducing the number of MPs, I think it is a clear strategy to remove new parties and small parties. Practically, these parties' threshold increases. If the number decreases and the structure changes, more votes are needed to elect an MP ," said Çepani.

The head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, declared yesterday that the moment has come for citizens to express themselves through referendums, while he said that a law is being drafted with clear deadlines for each phase of the process. /CNA
