State-owned company TAROM launches direct flights from Romania to Albania

Romania's state-owned airline announced the launch of flights to Albania. TAROM officially launched the direct route connecting Romania with Tirana International Airport as a weekly flight throughout the summer season. The flight will operate every Wednesday.

TAROM said the route is designed to take advantage of Albania’s status as one of the fastest growing tourism markets in Europe. By eliminating the need for connecting flights through major European hubs, TAROM is improving access for Romanian leisure and business travelers heading to the Adriatic and Ionian coasts.

Passenger flow

With rising disposable incomes in Romania and a preference for short Mediterranean flights, the direct connection removes the “travel friction” that previously hindered spontaneous bookings. This change encourages longer stays and higher per capita spending in Albanian centers such as the Riviera, Berat, and Gjirokastra.

Tirana International Airport is expected to continue to aggressively attract European flag carriers to balance its heavy dependence on low-cost carriers.

If the seasonal Wednesday service maintains high load factors, market trends suggest that TAROM may evaluate converting this to a year-round operation or increasing the frequency to several times a week.

Furthermore, this connection is likely to trigger a rise in "multi-destination" Balkan itineraries, where tour operators connect Albania with neighboring territories, using Bucharest as a key entry point for Central and Eastern European travelers.

Flight Frequency: One direct flight per week, operating every Wednesday.

Seasonality: The service is currently scheduled for the summer travel period.

Main Hubs: Direct connections between Romania and Tirana International Airport.

Target Demographics: Leisure travelers (beach and cultural tourism), corporate visitors, and students.

Strategic Goal: To diversify Tirana's European itineraries network and increase the volume of Romanian tourists going abroad.
