"Begaj violated the Constitution", Xhaferri: The candidate supported

Democratic Party MP Besart Xhaferri has commented on today's decision of the Constitutional Court to suspend President Bajram Begaj's decree on the date of the elections in Tirana. Xhaferri told Syri TV that President Begaj has violated the Constitution by announcing the election day in Tirana.

"The President of Albania has been in constitutional violation since the Court did not recognize the vacancy. The Constitutional Court said that we will review the vacancy, so we should not announce the elections. Here is the constitutional violation of the President, who announced the day of the elections for the Municipality of Tirana. What is happening today is the suspension of his constitutional violation. It is not a suspension of the decree. The fact that it does not annul the elections is because the Constitutional Court has not yet expressed its opinion on the vacancy," the democrat MP initially said.

The Democratic MP said that Albanian citizens should understand that the opposition is only defending the Constitution of Albania. He added that it would be in the interest of the opposition if the elections were held a few months ago. Xhaferri said that the DP is convinced that the independent candidate is guaranteed victory whenever the elections are held.

"Albanian citizens must understand that the opposition is not afraid of the elections and is not defending that the elections will not take place, or is not defending Erion Veliaj from still being at the head of the Municipality. The opposition has a constitutional duty from its voters to defend the Constitution of Albania. In the interest of the Albanian opposition, the elections should have taken place in February, March, or earlier than now for the Municipality of Tirana. The Prime Minister is using his puppet, the President, to violate the Constitution.

"We, as the opposition, will enter the elections. There is no second presidential decree to accept the elections. Today, technically, it passes to the chairman of the CEC. One thing should be clear: in this country, there is no longer a guarantee for the Constitution. We are convinced that the independent candidate supported by the Democratic Party will win whenever the elections are held ," the MP said. /CNA
