EU moves towards limiting social media for minors/ Von der Leyen: We could come

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the European Union is considering the possibility of raising the age limit for using social media, and that a legal proposal could be presented during the summer of this year.

Speaking at a conference in Copenhagen on protecting children in the age of artificial intelligence, von der Leyen stressed the importance of protecting minors in the digital space and the need to give children more time to develop resilience during the early stages of growth.

"I believe we should consider a delay in the use of social media. Depending on the results of the expert panel, we could come up with a legal proposal this summer," she said.

According to her, several EU member states, including France, have proposed raising the age limit to 15 or a unified solution at the European level. Meanwhile, she also mentioned the example of Australia, which has set a minimum age of 16 for the use of social networks.

Von der Leyen also stressed that raising the age limit does not remove responsibility from technology companies, which according to her must provide platforms "secure by design", in accordance with the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA).

She added that any restrictions would depend on a reliable age verification system, referring to a new EU application for this purpose, which has however faced criticism over security issues, but which she said "meets the required criteria"./ CNA
