OSCE Ambassador Tarran: Journalists in Albania, a voice that must be heard

The Ambassador of the OSCE Presence in Tirana, Michael Tarran, today praised journalism as an effort against distrust of institutions and corruption.

At a conference attended by journalists and civil society representatives, Tarran emphasized that the media community in Albania is active.

Tarran shared the criticism that the voice of journalists should be heard and that they should work under high ethical conditions.

“I am glad to see a group of participants here, journalists, civil society representatives and decision-makers. The theme of this conference is timely, journalism is an institution that must be held accountable. Public spaces in Europe and everywhere are taking new forms. We see how common these challenges are. The decline in trust in institutions, corruption, are consequences that weigh heavily on us. Our efforts must be coordinated on a democratic basis. We must support media freedom, improving the legal framework, promoting dialogue. Security today is not a matter of territories, but of spaces. Allow me to draw your attention to Albania. Measures have been taken to improve the work of journalists. Media ownership, transparency, obligations have improved. The media community in Albania is active. Their voice must be heard and they must be engaged. There is a need to strengthen transparency and legal protection. Journalists must work in the highest conditions and within ethics. The OSCE presence will continue "to work harder to strengthen the role of journalists," Tarran said./CNA
