Absurd decision in Milan-Bologna, referees punished

Milan narrowly won against Bologna, but the match was accompanied by major controversy over a penalty shootout.

Referee Matteo Marcenaro initially awarded the penalty, but the decision was overturned after the intervention of the VAR, led by Michael Fabbri. The Italian Refereeing Authority has negatively assessed the management of this episode.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the main problem was the way Fabbri showed Marcenaro the footage, not clearly showing the contact with Lucumi. For this reason, the VAR error was considered more serious than the main referee's.

As a result, Fabbri will be suspended for at least two matches, while Marcenaro may miss only one match.

The president of the Italian Federation, Gabriele Gravina, acknowledged the error, but stressed that the technology should continue to be used.
